The Friday the 13th film series has cemented Jason Voorhees as one of the most terrifying horror icons of all time. Instantly recognizable in his hockey mask, Jason has become synonymous with slasher horror. However, a strange Mandela Effect has left fans questioning their memories of his weapon of choice.
The Memory: Jason’s Iconic Weapon Was a Chainsaw
Many horror fans vividly recall Jason Voorhees wielding a chainsaw as his signature weapon throughout the Friday the 13th films. The idea of Jason revving up a chainsaw and chasing his victims through the woods is so deeply ingrained in popular memory that it seems undeniable.
However, the strange thing is… this never happened.
The Reality: Jason’s Main Weapon Is a Machete
In reality, Jason never used a chainsaw as his primary weapon in any of the Friday the 13th films. Instead, his most iconic weapon has always been a machete.
While Jason has used a variety of weapons throughout the franchise—including spears, axes, and even his bare hands—the chainsaw is not one of them. Fans who revisit the movies today are often shocked to realize that their memory of Jason chasing victims with a chainsaw simply doesn’t exist.
My Mandela effect (or not bc i can explain it) was for the longest time I thought Jason Voorhees had a chainsaw bc almost every time Friday the 13th gets parodied in a cartoon/movie/something they have a character wearing a hockey mask and wielding a chainsaw. idk why

I still think Jason and a chainsaw is the biggest Mandela effect of horror. pic.twitter.com/i0IUE20U0Q

Guys, I just realized a new Mandela Effect! Jason Voorhees, noted chainsaw murderer, right?
— Joe D. (@Shake_Well) December 15, 2019
NO. He literally never kills one single person with a chainsaw in 11 films.
WHOAAAAAAAAAAA. DID I JUST BLOW YOUR MIND???
(I didn't. It's just that pop culture shorthand is often wrong.)
@Newsweek Just so you know, there’s a mistake in your article about AMC’s upcoming horror fest marathons. Jason Voorhees doesn’t use a chainsaw, he’s known for using a machete. In fact, the only motorized weapon he uses in all of his movies is a weedwhacker.

Jason Voorhees has never used a chainsaw in any of the Friday the 13th films. His weapon of choice is a machete. #TheMoreYouKnow

Are Fans Confusing Jason with Leatherface?
One possible explanation for this Mandela Effect is that some fans may be subconsciously mixing up Jason Voorhees with Leatherface, the chainsaw-wielding killer from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre films.
However, many fans insist that this is not the case. They argue that they distinctly remember Jason—not Leatherface—using a chainsaw, specifically in a Friday the 13th movie.
So, if Jason never used a chainsaw, did he ever use any machine-powered weapons?
Jason and the Weed Wacker – The Closest Thing?
While Jason Voorhees never used a chainsaw, he did wield a gas-powered weed wacker with a circular saw blade in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988).
In this scene, Jason attacks a victim using the bladed weed wacker in one of the film’s brutal kills. This is one of the very few times Jason has used a motorized weapon, and it may be why some people associate him with a chainsaw.
Why Do So Many Remember Jason with a Chainsaw?
This Mandela Effect remains a mystery. Here are a few possible explanations:
- Horror Icon Overlap: Jason’s hulking stature and Leatherface’s chainsaw attacks may have blended in people’s memories over time.
- Parodies and Merchandising: Some Friday the 13th fan art, posters, or horror spoofs may have depicted Jason using a chainsaw, reinforcing the false memory.
- The Mandela Effect in Action: Could this be a case of memories from an alternate reality where Jason really did use a chainsaw?
